Little Rock, AR— Governor Asa Hutchinson of Arksansas vetoed HB1570 today, a bill which would ban medical practitioners from providing gender-affirming services to transgender youth. The bill is broadly opposed by LGBTQIA+ activists, medical associations, and many others. Now the bill returns to the legislator where they could decide to override the veto.
Gov. Hutchinson recognizes that General Assembly will likely override. This is not over. Arkansas has a simple majority override. We have to flip a lot of votes. Keep up the pressure folks. We need to protect trans kids!— Chase Strangio (@chasestrangio) April 5, 2021
Unlike many other states, and Congress, Arkansas’ state legislature has a simple-majority veto override. HB1570 originally passed the state house with a 70-22 vote, and the state senate with a 28-7 vote, even exceeding the two-thirds veto override set by most state legislatures. LGBTQIA+ leaders and activists are calling on everyone to continue contacting the Arkansas state legislature to advocate against a veto override of HB1570.
